Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Roman Russo, Founder, Author, and Chief Happiness Officer at Optimal Happiness. Due to increasing inquiries about me online and in my personal and professional lives, I have decided to write a little bit more about myself all in one place for everyone to read.

“How did you start Optimal Happiness?”

When I introduce myself to someone new, they usually ask me what I do. My response is that I am a happiness coach, and that around 25 years old, I was deeply depressed, which prompted me to embark on a journey to resolve this aspect of my life once and for all. 

At that time, I had a well-paid corporate job that allowed me to acquire virtually anything my heart desired. Some of my possessions included a house in the heart of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, stylish watches, the latest smartphone, a nice bicycle (no need for a car in Amsterdam), designer clothing, access to vibrant social events, and all the other gadgets often associated with a good and happy life.

However, when I had it all, I realized that I was still not happy. It was surprising because until then I thought that having money was the key to happiness. Yet, despite having everything I had ever wanted I was still unhappy and now I was forced to confront my inner struggles, as I could no longer hide behind the belief that happiness was just around the corner and that I only needed a bit more money to feel happy.

This pivotal moment led me to leave my well-paid job and commit to resolving this issue once and for all.

My Pursuit of Happiness

Over the next 6 years, I uncovered several significant lessons in my pursuit of happiness, such as:

  1. Happiness is the #1 goal in life, as everything we do is ultimately in the pursuit of happiness
  1. What happiness truly is and consequently what it take to be happy
  1. Why are most people frustrated, seeking happiness in all the wrong places, and ultimately adopting a defeatist attitude by claiming that:

a) “happiness is impossible”
b) “we shouldn’t even desire to be happy” or
c) “negative emotions are equally, if not more, important than happiness.”

However, as Henry Ford famously said: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right,” suggesting that this sort of belief is exactly what keeps us from being happy.

After all, despite living in the most advanced society the world has ever seen, every year we set new record levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. So if happiness was ever possible, it is now. However, it is not the case, indicating that something is seriously wrong in regards to our happiness.

Finding the Real Formula for Happiness

However, the good news is that the solution for happiness exists, and it is ultimately to look at the finish line – what it really takes to become the happiest we can be, otherwise known as our happiest potential, or Optimal Happiness. When we do this, we realize why certain things don’t work, why some are counterproductive, and the real formula for lasting and unconditional happiness, which is something everyone can learn and apply to their lives.

It’s essential to keep in mind that even if we improve our lives by say, 10, 20, or more percent, we can still fall short of true happiness and end up disappointed, as the key is to never settle for a “good enough” answer. So even when we become happier, we should ask ourselves “is there more?” and “can I be even happier?” If the answer is “yes,” then we aren’t there yet. 

By embracing an Optimal Happiness mentality, we can eventually become one of the happiest people in the world. This is precisely what happened to me, as I now consider myself part of the 0.0001% happiness elite, being happy 99.9% of the time. 

This statement often shocks people, as they immediately think of all the reasons why this shouldn’t be possible, and even if it is, why we shouldn’t want it. But it is ultimately the truth about happiness. If I was able to do it, so can you. And while I spent 6 years inventing the wheel, you can learn it all in just 8 hours, which is realistically speaking how long it will take you to learn the full Optimal Happiness formula.

Furthermore, once I found Optimal Happiness, I realized that I had something special – the solution to a problem that many people struggle with. This led to a belief that if we have a solution to other people’s needs, it becomes our moral obligation to share it with them. This belief ultimately led to the creation of Optimal Happiness.

My Life Before and After Happiness

I don’t consider myself particularly smart, lucky, or privileged. I was born into a middle-class family, I don’t have particularly “good genes,” and I don’t consider myself special in any other way. 

My older brother was initially my role model, but lacking strong role models himself led me to realize I was responsible for my own personal development. My parents did the best they could, and society did the rest. This means that I have spent many years unlearning certain bad behaviors while learning others that my family, school, or society didn’t teach me or taught me incorrectly.

One of my initial breaking points came when I discovered the personal development movement and became a vivid reader and learner, but still, no one really had an answer for happiness. Sure, there were plenty of people offering advice such as on: 

  • Money, which, as we saw, doesn’t ultimately and necessarily transform into happiness, 
  • Psychology books, which deal with making people a little bit happier or less sad, but again no lasting happiness, and 
  • Other literature, so I was still forced to create Optimal Happiness.

As such, I realized that either ultimate and unconditional happiness is truly impossible or it just hasn’t been discovered yet. It turned out to be the latter of the two, which ultimately led on a path to teach Optimal Happiness and give more people what they most want, the so-called #1 goal of life, which is to be happy.
