When it comes to happiness, Christianity has a lot to say. In fact, the Bible is filled with verses about joy and happiness. God wants us to be happy in this life, and He has given us many commandments and instructions on how to find lasting joy and happiness.
According to Christianity, happiness is not a destination that we reach once we have accomplished all of our goals. Rather, it is a state of mind that we can achieve by following God’s commandments and living our lives according to His laws. When we focus on pleasing Him rather than ourselves, we find true joy and happiness in spite of the trials and tribulations we may face.
Christianity teaches us that one of the keys to happiness is thankfulness. When we take the time to appreciate all that God has given us – even during tough times – we can experience true happiness. So if you’re looking for happiness according to Christianity, start by being thankful for all the good in your life, even when things are tough.
In addition to thankfulness, Christianity teaches that happiness comes from within. When we focus on being kind and loving towards others, we find happiness in our own lives. So start looking for ways to make other people happy – it will definitely make you feel good as well!
There are many bible verses about happiness that teach us that true happiness can only be found when we put God first in our lives. When we devote ourselves to Him and His commandments, we find contentment and peace that surpasses anything this world has to offer.
In fact, God tells us to be happy more times in Scripture than any other command. Think about that! Commands such as “rejoice,” “be of good cheer,” “do not be afraid,” “give thanks” – are all different ways of God telling us to be happy.
Lessons on Happiness in the Bible
Temporary Joy
Momentary happiness is possible. This occurs to us when all the stars align when life is easy and we have nothing to worry about. We all know that this situation is doomed to fail. Happiness can vanish in the blink of an eye when circumstances change. If we’re being totally honest, we have to admit that even in the best of situations, happiness is sometimes absent. It’s still possible for us to have internal turmoil.
Concern for our offspring, our future, our finances, or our connections amongst one another still plagues us. Some detail escapes our attention. The joy we feel never quite matches up to the ideal we have for ourselves. This first kind of joy is fleeting and superficial. Inevitably, it fades away, leaving behind only the pursuit of lasting contentment.
Happiness that Comes from God
Ultimately, one can find happiness in God. The happiness you feel will stay with you forever. The result is a calmness of mind that is not affected by external factors. True happiness persists through any and all adversity, and we all face it. When challenged, it often emerges even more resilient.
The happiness that comes from knowing Jesus brings contentment to the heart even if the tears continue to flow. Happiness has nothing to do with whether or not your goals are accomplished, how much money you have, or how famous you become. Along the way, we’ll pick up wisdom from Jesus on how to live a fulfilled life.
Society’s Happiness Myths
Today, people believe that money, power, and accumulation of material goods or experience is the key to happiness, as if achieving total contentment hinged on the elimination of all problems. It’s interesting to eavesdrop on the chatter in the office cafeteria at lunchtime:
“How are you today?”
“If I win the lotto, my life will be perfect.”
“It seems like you’re in a lot of emotional distress.”
“Nothing that a million bucks couldn’t solve!”
By saying, “A person’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions,” (Luke 12:15) Jesus dispels this notion.
The Soul Has No Price
The judgments of others are a source of anxiety for many of us. As a first priority, we need to make sure that God does not consider us to be a fool. So, Jesus warned, will be the man who stores up wealth for himself but is poor in the sight of God.
A human being’s soul is irreplaceable and cannot be bought or sold. We cannot buy more time with money or material goods. When we reach the next world, everything we own here on Earth will be worthless. It’s pointless to even try. Nothing we own at birth follows us into the next world. When our very selves are called upon, we must be happy and fulfilled with only those things that can be taken with us. Reason enough to look elsewhere for fulfillment if we want to avoid chasing after material success.
How Can We Be Wealthy in God’s Eyes?
One must first consider the price Christ paid to reconcile us to God. With full divine equality with the Father and the Holy Spirit, the Son made the selfless decision to take on human form. But the sacrifice He made by becoming a servant and humbling Himself had even greater repercussions. He bought it completely by giving up His own life on the cross. We were so valuable in His eyes that He paid for us with His own blood instead of currency.
The eternal soul, which is God’s own life, has been declared to be of great worth. To be rich toward God, we need to trust Him with the care of our souls. In total devotion to Him, we prioritize His life over our own.
Past, Present, and Future
It’s tough to be truly content when we’re worried and troubled. Anxiety can be caused by a wide variety of factors. There are a plethora of factors to consider, including but not limited to money, health, family, a full schedule, a large team, and demanding work.
Many of our waking hours are consumed by anxious thoughts of the past. Everything we did, said, and how we did it. Was that what they intended? I really wish they hadn’t misunderstood me. We dwell in the past way too much.
As a culture, we also waste a lot of time worrying about the future. As a counterpoint, it would appear that we are currently missing out on a lot of peaceful moments. Happiness comes from being present in the moment rather than worrying about the past or the future.
The Recipe for Peace and Happiness
God’s peace can keep our hearts at rest because of Jesus. The only real cure for anxiety is a relationship with the living God. According to Jesus, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Because of him, we now have access to God and can share in God’s very life. It is His promise that He will never abandon us. God has the power to erase mistakes and make things right. Rather than worrying about the past, why not live in the present? God is able to restore and heal. Since God is omniscient, we can put our trust in Him for the days to come. No need to worry about what we can’t change, the future.
Jesus, while on earth, fully embodied the human condition. To fulfill His role as God, He experienced only the range of human feelings, emotions, and pain. He put all his faith in the Father’s eternal existence. Tiredness, hunger, thirst, sadness, and betrayal were all things he felt. But He never showed signs of worry. To put it simply, he was calm. And if we are in the hand of the all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-powerful God, then we have the recipe for peace and true happiness. What gives you cause for concern?
Yet Another Misconception
Most people will tell you to prioritize yourself, because if you don’t, no one else will. Jesus once again refutes this. According to Jesus, we won’t be happy if we prioritize our own needs above those of others. On the other hand, if we are willing to sacrifice our own desires for Christ’s sake, He will grant us abundant life. I have come so that you may have life, and have it abundantly,” Jesus said. Jesus’ “abundant life” refers to the supernatural joy that comes from a relationship with Him.
We, too, can inherit eternal life and become God’s sons. We can be happy no matter what our circumstances are because of prayer. Through Christ, we can be strengthened, at peace, and truly happy, experiencing the joy of the Lord, whether we are in a time of abundance or real need.
Have a Happy Disposition
Jesus said, “Be of good cheer,” multiple times (for example, John 16:33). One such event concerned the pursuit of happiness in the face of overwhelming tragedy. He imparted the message that He had triumphed over the evil forces that seek to steal and destroy, and had instead discovered the blessings of inner calm and fulfillment. Through the power of prayer and the indwelling Holy Spirit, He taught His disciples that they, too, could achieve victory.
Jesus also told his disciples, “Rejoice, for you have been forgiven” on another occasion. The reality of sins being forgiven would be the foundation upon which true joy and happiness could be built.
Jesus Beckons Us to Come to Him
We lose our serenity to sin. Guilt and disgrace are the results of sin. The soul becomes clouded by sin.
Close friendships are impeded by sin. Because of sin, we cannot be close to God. No one can forgive or remove their own sin. No human being is able to forgive wrongdoing. The only one who can truly forgive our sins is Jesus. To fulfill His mission of atoning for humankind’s sins, He descended to Earth. We can have eternal life because Christ died for our sins. One who has had their sins forgiven and from which God has erased all trace can rejoice.
Jesus extends an invitation for you to come to Him, admit your sin, and believe that His death on the cross was for your sins.
To Him, The Greatest Joy in the World is Seeing Us Happy
Embrace Him as your Savior by making Him your Lord. Jesus made it abundantly clear that we must actively engage in and remain a part of the church, the body of Christ, if we are to have His life in us. He said, “If you keep My commandments, just as I have kept the commandments of My Father, you too will abide in My love” (John 15:10). So that My joy might remain in you and that your joy might be complete, I have told you these things.
It is because of His delight that we are able to experience such abundant happiness. John, one of his disciples, said that this is realized in the church’s fellowship as the body of Christ.
