Today, my father showed me a video that gave a few excellent reasons why we should be unhappy. One of the main points of this video was that our bodies have an organ (amygdala) that is biologically designed to make us sad. This organ serves an evolutionary function of preventing us from dying. Therefore, the author of the video added that positivists rarely survive, and it is the realists who strive and live the longest. This is because negative emotions tell us about the risks we face globally, which is how we can prepare for these risks.
My father then asked, the happy guy, what I thought about this video. Without hesitation, I replied that there are will always be people who will try to justify why they are unhappy and make excuses for their unhappiness.
Superiority Of Happiness
Let us face the facts here. People have another evolutionary bias, which is to do what is the easiest. Unfortunately, it is easier to be unhappy, while happiness requires an effort. In addition, people often act on their emotions, such as in extreme cases, they can stalk other people, commit suicide, or kill other human beings. Are all these actions logical? Are these acts make people happy? There are always exceptions, but unhappy people generally commit these actions because they are down. However, if we ask these people why they did it, they will give us rational explanations for their behavior. And this is exactly how we act in different situations. We might do many things because of our emotions, but later we will find a reason to justify these emotional actions with logic. Said, if someone is to give us a logical explanation for something, there might be some truth to their statements, but is it a superior truth?
For me, the truth is that generally speaking, happy people outperform unhappy people. They do so by being more proactive, social, healthy, wealthy, content, and exceeding their negative counterparts in virtually every other part of life. Emphasis is on generally speaking. So while we can be both happy and unhappy, happiness trumps unhappiness. It is an ideal way of living. And while it might be harder to be comfortable than sad, it is the unhappy person who is making excuses for their unhappiness, while it is the healthy person who shows strength in being happy.
The Limited Power Of Negative Emotions
But what about Amygdala? Certainly, whether we want it or not, it exercises power over our emotions. There is truth to this statement, but only to a point where it can 1) it brings negative emotions whenever we are thinking about something negative or 2) if something unfavorable happens in the outside world, it will make us unhappy. But 1) we can consciously change the way we are thinking, and 2) we don’t have to be defined by the things that happen in the outside world. Thus, if it is raining and we dislike the rain, our intuition is to become negative. But despite the negativity of the situation, we can continue feeling positive. Why? Because while we cannot control the external world, we can control our inner world.
And this is where it gets taught to be happy. But don’t worry. Happiness is a formula that you can learn and apply to your life, getting all these sweet benefits of being happy.
