NASA has stated that an asteroid called 2024 YR4 could hit Earth in 2032, and the actual chance of this happening is now 1 in 32, or 3.1%, updated from 1 in 67, or 1.5%, due to inflation, as one of my friends joked.
While NASA will do their best to avoid this situation, it will probably be called “fake news” by the Trump administration, as NASA’s budget may be decreased, which is also a joke, or is it?
God probably just said “screw it” and “I made a mistake somewhere between 2020 and 2030, so let’s restart the slate.” All good comedy.
On a more serious note, what are we going to do about this? I mean, most of us don’t have anything concrete we can do about this situation, so I suggest not overthinking yet another possible end-of-life scenario. There has always been a chance of an asteroid hitting us, although it was always inconcrete, so we now have a percentage for this happening.
Of course, there is always a chance that an asteroid we can’t account for could hit us while we are overly concerned about a recession, getting drunk, and the opinions of others. Or there could be countless other events that end all life (or lives) meanwhile.
I don’t say this to be pessimistic, but rather I joke about it because that’s a natural human response when we are faced with scary, negative, or unimaginable events. Isn’t it true that all jokes are negative, meaning that someone gets hurt in them?
And so, the best happiness advice towards this negative news, and all others, is:
1) Turn off your TV and stop watching/reading news – for the most part, traditional media news is negative, so it’s the surest and fastest way to get depressed.
2) Stop trying to control the uncontrollable – for the most part, we can’t do anything about it anyway, so we do nobody any favors (especially ourselves) by obsessing over these things.
3) Live your life to the fullest and without regrets – so when the time comes, whether it is 2032, earlier, or later, you can say with confidence, “I had a great life!”
4) YOLO, but don’t forget about tomorrow – It’s important to live in the now, making the most of current experiences, while it is equally important not to forget that you are likely to be here tomorrow, and therefore plan accordingly. This means striving for constant improvement, at least until 2032, until we know for sure that the world ends, and then we can throw an End of The World party. See you there.
Stay happy and try not to get hit by a comet.
