The fastest way to make 50% of the world happier is by focusing on one of the most historically discriminated and forgotten groups of people: women.
As a white man, I confess that I had to catch up on a few issues that women face every day, discarding them because they were not personally relevant to me. However, by closing my eyes, I was discriminating against this group of people, as I was not open to listening to their problems, fears, and desires. So if you aren’t aware of issues like women being afraid to go out, being directly or indirectly sexualized, being discriminated against, or not being taken seriously at work, and much more, you are probably a man.
Even worse, in politics and the corporate world, we still have predominantly men in power, meaning that our leaders don’t show enough interest in issues of the 50% of the population, and have a tendency to close their eyes toward the needs of everyone else who is not personally relevant for them.
This issue further spreads towards minorities who are also often discriminated against.
Interestingly enough, discrimination is so normalized in our society that we might personally defend certain issues, like women’s issues, but completely disregard or even propagate other issues, such as issues on minorities.
The cure is of course to have more women in power, at least 50%, as well as trying to represent people from all different backgrounds and interests, as much as possible. Moreover, everyone should have the same general interest in the issues other people experience, listening to them and trying to understand, even if these issues aren’t personally relevant to us.
